It’s the last Friday of June! Welcome back to the weekly newsletter.

Trying to stay cool in the summer heat? Why not check out the new releases arriving today at the IFI? IFI French Festival hit A Private Life screens from today, starring Jodie Foster in her first leading French-speaking role. Love absurdist comedies and Mads Mikkelsen? Well The Last Viking also opens today, delivering silliness and violence in spades.

We are also hosting several special events too. Venture into the unknown with the experimental Trance Films presented by aemi; check out our IFI Family screenings of My Father’s Dragon in partnership with The Ark; enjoy the surprise of our Mystery Matinee; and enter Spielberg’s dystopian vision of the future with Minority Report, introduced by author and screenwriter Derek Landy (Skulduggery Pleasant series, Boy Eats Girl). And that’s all without mentioning our upcoming Odysseys Season, a companion programme that pairs perfectly with Christopher Nolan’s long-awaited return, The Odyssey, screening in 70mm exclusively at the IFI from July 17th. However, if it’s a film festival you’re after, Untold Ukraine returns for its second edition in early July with four new films celebrating cultural resistance.

But wait, there’s more on the way! Keep a look out for the various other events on the way. Dancer from the Dance presents a programme of new Irish dance films in collaboration with the Irish Modern Dance Theatre; EAFFI Discoveries brings us Jet Lag In Summer, followed by a Q&A with director Kunao Yan; Birds of War explores journalism, resilience and the enduring possibility of connection amid upheaval; Seth Rogen and Olivia Wilde host a hilariously awkward dinner in The Invite; and From The Vaults delivers a digital restoration of 1996’s The Last of the High Kings.

SPECIAL EVENTS

IFI FAMILY & THE ARK: MY FATHER’S DRAGON
Saturday 27th (11.00), Wednesday 8th (12.30), Thursday 30th (12.30)

To tie in with My Father’s Dragon exhibition at The Ark, we have four screenings of this beautiful animation from Kilkenny’s Cartoon Saloon. Directed by Nora Twomey, this colourful and sensitive adventure tells the story of a young boy, Elmer, who learns from a talking cat that a dragon on mysterious Wild land might solve their problems if he can rescue it from the magical island creatures. An enchanting film, filled with gorgeous detail which can be seen in the exhibition just next door at The Ark.

THE BIGGER PICTURE: SPIELBERG SCI-FI: MINORITY REPORT

Saturday 27th (14.00)

Adapted from a story by Philip K. Dick, Spielberg’s sleek, propulsive vision of a near-future where crime is predicted before it occurs is one of his most satisfying pieces of pure entertainment. Tom Cruise’s PreCrime officer John Anderton becomes the system’s next target, forced to flee and question the infallibility of the “precogs.” Blending noir tension with speculative science fiction, Spielberg crafts a gripping meditation on free will, surveillance, and the fragile boundary between justice and control.

The screening will be introduced by author and screenwriter Derek Landy (Skulduggery Pleasant series, Boy Eats Girl).

MYSTERY MATINEE

Sunday 28th (13.00)

The film chosen could be anything from throughout the history of cinema, from a silent classic to a preview of a hotly anticipated upcoming release.

Whether it’s a title that one might expect to see at the IFI, or a film more at home in the multiplexes, the secret, closely guarded even from IFI staff, will be kept until the title appears onscreen. Expect the unexpected and take a chance, with tickets costing just €6.50 for IFI Members, and €7.00 for non-members.

IFI & AEMI PRESENT: TRANCE FILMS

Tuesday 30th (18.30)

An international programme of experimental ‘trance films’ curated by aemi. The films selected here bypass comprehension, they are works to be experienced rather than understood, and include two rare 35mm screenings.

Go beyond the screen and venture into the unknown possibilities of cinema.

UNTOLD UKRAINE

Opens Thursday 2nd

This summer, Untold Ukraine returns for its second edition with four films exploring one of Ukraine’s most powerful forms of resistance: the preservation of culture and identity through storytelling.

From reflections on school life in Ukraine amid wartime realities in Timestamp, to the story of an unlikely dreamer searching for connection at the edge of the universe in U Are the Universe, these films offer a glimpse into the contemporary realities of Ukrainians beyond the headlines.

BUT WAIT! THERE'S MORE!

We are conducting some research into online viewing habits and we would really appreciate your input! Below is a short survey that includes questions about your preferred platforms and how often you use them.

ODYSSEYS SEASON

Join us next month for Odysseys, our new season of 12 cinematic journeys to coincide with the IFI’s exclusive 70mm presentation of Christopher Nolan’s highly-anticipated The Odyssey. The season opens with a special Bigger Picture screening of Franco Piavoli’s rarely seen Nostos: The Return, introduced by Helen Meany, Festival Director of Classics Now. Other films include the Coen Brothers’ playful retelling O Brother, Where Art Thou?, Monte Hellman's cult road movie Two-Lane Blacktop, Werner Herzog’s feverish classic Aguirre, the Wrath of God and more. Book now and take a trip with us through some of cinema's greatest road movies.
