Hello and welcome to the latest edition of our IFI Weekly Newsletter.

Opening this week in-cinema are Paul Mescal-starring God's Creatures, award-winning rural thriller The Beasts and enigmatic time-traveling melodrama The Five Devils.

Special events this week include a homecoming screening of Oscar winning short film An Irish Goodbye with Q&A on Saturday 25th, our IFI Family screening of Raya and the Last Dragon on Sunday 26th, our Wild Strawberries over 55s film club screenings of The Big Hit on Wednesday 29th and Friday 31st and Careers in Animation event on Thursday 30th for young people aged 15-18 interested in animation.

The East Asia Film Festival (EAFFI) starts on Thursday 30th opening with Love Life followed by a Q&A with director Kōji Fukada, hosted by critic Tara Brady (The Irish Times).

AN IRISH GOODBYE + Q&A

Saturday March 25th, 15.10

Floodlight Pictures present a special gala screening of their BAFTA and Academy award-winning short film An Irish Goodbye, as part of their Homecoming Tour. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with writer-director duo Ross White and Tom Berkeley.

On a farm in rural Northern Ireland, estranged brothers Turlough (Seamus O’Hara) and Lorcan (James Martin) are forced to reunite following the untimely death of their mother (Michelle Fairley).


IFI FAMILY: RAYA AND THE LAST DRAGON

Sunday March 26th, 11.00

Get the full big screen experience of Disney’s latest dragon adventure with a brave female warrior who offers a new take on the princess.

Drawing on Asian mythology, it is set in the world of Kumandra where humans and dragons co-existed until the monstrous Druun turned inhabitants to stone. The land splits into disharmony and Raya, daughter of a leader, embarks on a quest to find the last sleeping dragon Sisu (Awkwafina), who can dispel the Druun.


WILD STRAWBERRIES: THE BIG HIT

Shambolic actor Étienne, whose dreams of stage glory have faded, brings his unruly bunch of prisoners face to face with Beckett’s play, yielding some great performances and personal discoveries in the process.


CAREERS IN ANIMATION

Thursday March 30th, 10.00

A morning event for young people aged 15-18 interested in animation. Featuring talks, guests, screenings and more, including Deirdre Barry, Programme Director, National Talent Academy for Animation; Studio Meala; an Animation Talent Academy panel; and portfolio tips and hints with Animation graduate Chloe O’Connor.

EAFFI 2023: LOVE LIFE + Q&A

Thursday 30th, 20.00

Taeko lives in a small Japanese city with her husband Jiro and her eight-year-old son Keita, from a previous marriage. After a tragic accident, homeless and jobless, her deaf ex-husband Park reappears in Taeko’s life. Taeko is the only person who can communicate with Park, using Japanese sign language, and this disrupts Taeko and Jirō’s already unbalanced family life.

This screening will be followed by a Q&A with director Kōji Fukada, hosted by critic Tara Brady (The Irish Times).
