WILD STRAWBERRIES: THE DUKE

Director: Roger Michell

95 mins, UK, 2020, Digital

Wild Strawberries screenings are for over 55s only.

This finely tuned caper comedy, that recalls something of the spirit of Ealing, is sadly the final film from versatile and admired British director, Roger Michell. Getting the absolute best from his actors, he casts Jim Broadbent and Helen Mirren as husband and wife, struggling to make do in 1960s Newcastle. Based on the true story of retired taxi driver Kempton Bunton, who stole a Goya portrait to make a point about the non-payment of his TV license. Broadbent has a whale of a time in the out of touch London courtroom defending himself, running rings around the stuffy lawyers as he takes one small step for the common man or woman struggling to make ends meet.
